Brooklyn Flea Market

                               Photo from www.brooklynflea.com

It’s that time of year when we flock outside, making the most of these fleeting yet glorious spring and summer months. While the options abound, there is one mainstay that never disappoints – Brooklyn Flea Market (at 176 Lafayette Ave. on Saturdays and in Williamsburg on the water on Sundays). Whether you are hunting for vintage finds while happily running into your neighbors, or people- watching as you chat with the vendors, there is something for everyone. We would suggest some favorite vendors, but there is something uniquely individual about the Flea’s offerings, so we instead suggest that you visit and figure out for yourself which best expresses your own style of dress, interior design, art, etc.

We were lucky enough to interview Eric Demby, one of the Flea’s founders. He described some of what we love about Brooklyn Flea – the fact that it is its own community. The community includes not only the Flea’s patrons, but also the vendors, who have formed bonds of friendship among each other. In fact, perhaps the best expression of the Flea’s commitment to the community is the fact that their cleanup crew is made up of formerly homeless people that now have a place to work and interact with others.

Eric also filled us in on some exciting things that we can expect for the upcoming months! Watch for the launch of Smorgasbar in June, which will offer Brooklyn-brewed beer, wine and spirits. There will also be several interesting Kitchen Island (with Brooklyn Kitchen) events at Smorgasburg (Brooklyn Flea’s foodie sister), starting with a Daisy Flour Pie Contest on June 9th

Googa Mooga

We are spoilt for choice of activity during the upcoming weekend, particularly with the weather promising to be downright pleasant. Top on the list is GoogaMooga, with a name so tongue-twisting that those who are not in the know will assume that you are making it up. Taking place in Brooklyn's bucolic Prospect Park, the self-proclaimed "amusement park of food and drink" promises to sate our foodie cravings, gathering some impressive names in one giant field. Notable on this list are: Big Gay Ice Cream, Calexico, Momofuku Milk Bar, Red Rooster Harlem, and Roberta's. Oh yeah, and let's not forget the wine tasting tent and beer pavilion. Naturally, there will be live music spicing up the atmosphere.

Being the inaugural launch of this festival, it will hopefully deliver the awesome we expect, but more details to follow after this weekend!

You didn't think we'd forget to shout out the fashion trending at the Great GoogaMooga, did you? Never fear, there will be live tweets (@styleshifters - follow us, we will love you for it!), recaps and photos galore. Apparel suggestions: um, well, neon obviously. Neon + sparkle-laden shoes = perfection. See you in the park!!

Summer in New York...

Sun-splashed strolls along the Hudson River. Sundresses and sandals spotted at street fairs.

Days spent sunning in Central Park accompanied by a jaunt to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. And, StyleSetters, if you share our love for fashion + art, you will want to check out the Met's current exhibit, entitled Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations.

Designs by the two iconic Italian designers are on display throughout several galleries, culminating with "The Surreal Body." Given Schiaparelli's friendships with Dali and Cocteau, this gallery is particularly intriguing and ranks as our favorite. [Admittedly, another reason for our adoration of Schiaparelli is the unabashed use of shocking pink in her designs.] In a wink to the surreal and to the two designers, Anna Wintour wore a Prada-designed version of Schiaparelli's famous lobster dress originally designed in collaboration with Dali to the Met Gala this past Monday.

The exhibit also features video directed by Baz Luhrmann, conjuring up impossible conversations between the two women.

Check it out through August 19, 2012!

Blooming on Earth Day

This spring, we’ve embraced the lovely floral looks blooming  throughout the city! In honor of Earth Day, we’re presenting a bouquet of our favorites:

BB Dakota
BB Dakota

BB Dakota offers flowered dresses and tops to brighten up a rainy April day. We particularly enjoy the inventive use of flower petals on some of their designs.

Maggy London
Maggy London

These breezy looks are perfect for day to night, although we would prefer to wear them at an English garden party.

Zamrie

We are slightly obsessed with Zamrie’s Spring 2012 collection, which bursts with color. Zamrie offers a creative variety of pastoral ensembles, ready to be plucked and worn to nearly any occasion.

You can find selections from BB Dakota and Maggy London at Purdy Girl, Jessie James, Darling, and, for Brooklynites, Teddy.

For some Literary Inspiration:

I WANDERED lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
          A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
          They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced; but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay,
          In such a jocund company:
          I gazed--and gazed--but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
          Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
          And dances with the daffodils.

Neon Animal Print? But of course.

Thanks to our fabulous eye for fashion and oozing charisma another case of the style gods smiling upon us, what started as just an admirer's portrait of Mercedes Hart (pictured above) turned into so much more!

But let's start at the beginning. Remember our Amanda Uprichard shopping spree around the new year? Well apparently we love her so much that we are drawn to her designs without even knowing that they are hers!  Mercedes first caught our eye with her vibrant yellow and blue Amanda Uprichard hoodie paired with an amazing cross, which was handmade in Mexico for Virgins, Saints & Angels. Sadly, you can't see the cross too well here but not to worry - we will be following up in a couple months with a post on Virgins, Saints  Angels and their designs!

Another fun fact - as it turns out, Mercedes is featured in the collage of photos as taken from Diplo's 128 Beats Per Minute and on display at Milk Gallery. We all know how it goes (or, in our case, pretend to) - she just happened to be hanging out with Diplo and Shane McCauley in Mexico City at a Major Lazer party, where Shane just happened to snap her photo, which just happened to be so effortlessly amazing...

Milk Gallery presents Diplo's 128 Beats per Minute

Neon lights slicing through mist and disappearing. Turning a mirrored corner. Catching a glimpse of beautiful people. City streets twinkling beyond the glass. If there were no tomorrow, we’d be nowhere else but here…

That was Saturday’s afterparty at Le Bain, but it could have easily been captured as a moment in time and added to Diplo’s 128 Beats Per Minute. Until April 11th, Milk Gallery presents photos from the book, which features photography by Shane McCauley and a foreward by Alexander Wang.

As you might imagine, Milk + Diplo + ShaneMcCauley + Alexander Wang > epic. Take epic and raise it some Mad Decent (Diplo’s record label) and you get just a glimmer of the launch party, which was studded with power players both in person and in the photos on display. We were spoiled by the cornucopia of stylesetters. Not surprisingly, there were sheer skirts galore and several partygoers with skateboard in hand. One trend that we loved was the varsity jacket on both men and women. Our favorite moment of the night occurred with the photos as the backdrop for a (very) slow motion dance-off between a tiny fascinator-wearing girl and a floor-length tunic, giant headphone-wearing guy.

Check out this exhibition at Milk Gallery while it lasts! And, for the full version, you can pick up 128 Beats Per Minute either at Milk or at Urban Outfitters.
